Hot hot heat

It is just over a month until the southern hemisphere's Winter Solstice, and I sit typing in a short sleeved t-shirt, no shoes. It is too hot for this time of year, way too hot. If I ever needed reminding that global warming is real, this 'autumn' weather should do it.

I think it may be happening faster than even Al Gore tells us, and that freaks me out. We are literally manufacturing, shopping, driving and eating ourselves out of the only home we have. I am starting to think all those apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic films are not so very far-fetched after all, especially The Day After Tomorrow. That could actually happen. In fact, scary stuff a bit like it (but on a small scale) does keep happening.

Do you all find the weather weird? Have you noticed the changes since you were kids? Am I going crazy?

No, you are definitely NOT going crazy! I am in the South (USA) and it is VERY hot here already. I'm also very near the hurricane zone and right in the tornado path too. The weather has changed here for sure and all over the planet from what I hear and read. It is scary, terrifying. For people who say that Global Warming isn't real... I just don't know where they are living.

I blogged about this very thing not long ago:

Namaste.

Completely sane. After a super-mild winter in Beijing, we've got summer heat here a whole month early: nearly 90 Fahrenheit every day already. This city is supposedly seven times more polluted than the worst American cities, and Chinese pollution keeps showing up all over the world. I've even had allergic reactions to the rain here - very, very frightening. Some days it seems like Ground Zero for global warming.

completely true!!
I have noticed this over the last couple of years here in sydney... the summer's getting unbearably hot, the winter's still warm too!

add to that the fact we're living in one of the worst droughts in history here in australia.. it just stuns me that ppl say global warming isn't real.

Even if it wasn't as bad as it is - whatever happened to greedlessness??? not using more than we need/ought? yikes.. if ever there was a case to follow yogic yamas and niyamas, this is it!

You're not going crazy that's for sure. Temperatures here in Brunei are also scorching high on sunshiny days, and with landslides and floods on rainy days occuring more frequently now.

How scary that you are all in the same boat! It's true, though, that we can only do what we can do - consume less, and pressurize the powers that be to cut carbon emissions and rein in Big Corporate.

Living in FL, it just seems hot here all the time! There was a time when we first moved here that you really would get at least two different seasons, but not so much anymore...
And hurricane season starts in two weeks or so- goodie, goodie...

It freaks me out too! I didn't think it was as hot as normal this year with our Australian Summer but it might be hot one day and then cold the next. There's no rhyme or reason.

You are not going crazy. It is different everywhere and I knew this before Al Gore said anything! I get so angry when people say Global Warming is a myth. You can rationalize it as much as you want but it is still not changing the fact that we are killing this planet. The weather in NY has been in extremes. Yesterday it was close to 90 degrees, tomorrow it will barely be 60 degrees. That's a pretty big jump.

I get a pit in my stomach when I think about the footprint we as humankind are leaving on our Mother (earth). I don't have the attention span to do the research for myself to know for sure if global warming is an accurate statement or not. I just read popular books like State of Fear (Michael Crighton) and visit sites like: http://www.stuartwilde.com/articles/SW_articles_human_mind.htm (quote: "Those shots of icebergs collapsing in the sea are very dramatic but the truth is the icebergs have broken off the ice shelf and fallen in the sea since the beginning of time and research shows the poles are getting colder not hotter.")
So I personally an not convinced that global warming is necessarily the cause of what's happening here. I think that it is important for us all to be alert and pay attention and do our homework. I support Al Gore in his efforts to bring some important ideas to our attention because it encourages people to change their habits. but most importantly, I think that it is vital that we do our part to be aware and be part of the healing of mother earth rather than the destruction.

Hi YGG!
Interesting comment: one of my students has a similar point of view. She says we are all parts of the organism and it is hard to tell whether it is us or something else, since we are so interlinked. I agree though: change the bad habits and try to stay as much as possible away from the useless panic (erm, note to self)

i live and teach yoga in malaysia, and for the past 2-3 years, the weather here has been hellish. just 4 months ago, we witnessed devastating floods hit a southern state, sending chills down my spine. global warming is definitely real, and i wished we could all stop consuming like pigs. just use what we need. is that so difficult to do??
